Heather in Five Twitter Categories

As friends and family can attest, I was reluctant to join the masses on Facebook, however Twitter was another story!  I joined in April 2016 and have been slowly becoming more and more involved.  I love being able to catch up on the latest developments or learn new things quickly.

I’ve been giving a lot of thought to my personal brand lately, and I think the companies and organizations I follow give a good sense of who I am and what I value.  In reviewing them, they seem to fall into five main categories.

Financial Education – this is my area of passion, and the first organizations I followed were The Jump$tart Coalition The Council for Economic Education Experian  The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and The National Endowment for Financial Education, among others.  It is encouraging to see how many other companies are now including financial education as a priority in their tweets as well, and it is not uncommon to see helpful financial tips on non-finance Twitter accounts.

Business/Technology/Science – I am so grateful that Twitter allows me to easily keep up with many of the latest developments.  The world and technology are changing so quickly, and it is a lot of fun to see the amazing work people are doing.  Some favorites are: Forbes, Gizmodo, CNET, NASA and New York Times Tech

Outdoors/Travel – When I am not trying to earn my Nerd Cred, I love to read the posts from REI, Patagonia, National Park Service, Outside and Kimpton  Kimpton is, to me, the gold standard of customer service and social responsibility without being stuffy….a balance many fail to achieve!  REI also has really useful National Parks App that was a highlight of this year’s family Christmas  gathering – I encourage you to download it!

Local Interest -   I keep up on the latest locally by following Joshua Tree National Park, The Desert Sun News, Palm Springs Oasis, and Palm Springs Life

Facts/Humor/Inspirational – last but certainly not least, Quite Interesting,  Pew Research, Dalai Lama, History in Pictures, Very British Problems, and Loz Feliz Daycare all have a special place in my Twitter heart.

While Twitter's character limit and lack of context can be limiting factors, I think most brands have utilized it as a jumping off point for more comprehensive efforts.  It also allows brands to get in front of problems quickly.  However, if you do not have dedicated social media staff who are empowered to nimbly solve problems, things can escalate quickly.  Of note, the story this morning of Chef Jose Andres being asked to leave a restaurant in DC The Yelp reviews in reaction are pretty savage.

To keep this post from turning into a list of Twitter accounts, I have only listed a few in each category.  I hope you like them - let me know what you think!  As I continue on my Twitter journey, I am sure the number of people and organizations I follow will continue to grow.

Social Media for Introverts

This blog is a component of a “Social Media Marketing” class I am taking through the University of California Extension program.   I was interested in it, as it is part of the Non-Profit Management certificate curriculum.   When I decided to join he class, it was with the intent of applying the knowledge I gained to the Young Women Leaders (YWL) program I co-chair.   YWL is a local organization here in the desert which empowers young women through a combination of mentoring, workshops and scholarships.   However, the focus of this blog is supposed to be on marketing myself and building my brand online.   And, to be frank, this is much more challenging for me.   I could blog about financial education for days (and enjoy doing it!), and with enough content and reach, could potentially establish myself as an expert in the field.   But marketing myself has always been something I knew I should put more value and effort into, but could never get p...

First Post!

While a fan of many blogs since the early 2000s, I have never been motivated to post before.  I've developed numerous webpages and sites, but had no desire to add my personal thoughts.  Now I am volunteering with non-profits which could use more social media presence, and am excited to explore this area.  Stay tuned as this blog (and I) evolve!
