Social Media for Introverts

This blog is a component of a “Social Media Marketing” class I am taking through the University of California Extension program.  I was interested in it, as it is part of the Non-Profit Management certificate curriculum.  When I decided to join he class, it was with the intent of applying the knowledge I gained to the Young Women Leaders (YWL) program I co-chair.  YWL is a local organization here in the desert which empowers young women through a combination of mentoring, workshops and scholarships.

However, the focus of this blog is supposed to be on marketing myself and building my brand online.  And, to be frank, this is much more challenging for me.  I could blog about financial education for days (and enjoy doing it!), and with enough content and reach, could potentially establish myself as an expert in the field.  But marketing myself has always been something I knew I should put more value and effort into, but could never get past the feeling that it was bordering on bragging. In the business world, I know I focused more on the next challenge than past successes, and in some ways that was a disservice to me.

So in taking this class, I am going to keep stepping out of my comfort zone, link this blog to my Twitter and (very new) Facebook account, and try to become more at ease with the intersection of personal, professional, social, volunteering, family, and friends that social media will bring.

  1. I really enjoyed reading your post! I must admit, the title had me intrigued. :)

Have you considered how defining and promoting your personal brand may boost your name in the financial education field? After all, everyone's on social media these days!

As for stepping out of your comfort zone, it's one of the best decisions we could ever make, trust me! Social media are one of the best instruments to move forward nowadays.

  2. No need to feel like you're bragging. Your experience and resume speaks volumes of the quality of your character!

  3. Thanks for sharing "How do you stand" for your brand? It is not an easy task but as the class progress we may end up becoming more practice and face my brand stand out as well!

Heather in Five Twitter Categories

As friends and family can attest, I was reluctant to join the masses on Facebook, however Twitter was another story!   I joined in April 2016 and have been slowly becoming more and more involved.   I love being able to catch up on the latest developments or learn new things quickly. I’ve been giving a lot of thought to my personal brand lately, and I think the companies and organizations I follow give a good sense of who I am and what I value.   In reviewing them, they seem to fall into five main categories. Financial Education – this is my area of passion, and the first organizations I followed were The Jump$tart Coalition The Council for Economic Education Experian   The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and The National Endowment for Financial Education , among others.   It is encouraging to see how many other companies are now including financial education as a priority in their tweets as well, and it is not uncommon to see helpful financial...

First Post!

While a fan of many blogs since the early 2000s, I have never been motivated to post before.  I've developed numerous webpages and sites, but had no desire to add my personal thoughts.  Now I am volunteering with non-profits which could use more social media presence, and am excited to explore this area.  Stay tuned as this blog (and I) evolve!
